What is Ruby?

The beautiful jewel with a vibrant red color liked by many from ancient times. Its color and appearance is of such mesmerizing quality, that it attracts anyone with its beauty. 

Ruby is the member of Corundum family just like sapphires. It is named from the Latin word 'ruber', which means red.

Sapphires have different colors except red, because red is called the ruby. Ruby has its own entity it’s not sapphire but it’s from the same family as sapphire.

Ruby has the mohn scale 9.00, which is the hardest after diamond. It is very valuable jewel that comes from aluminum oxide and its shades depend on the unique combination of elements.

Rubies red color comes from chromium oxide. If the ruby is in that beautiful rich red color its due to presence of titanium. Whereas, light shaded ruby like pink is because of chromium and iron.

Different types of Ruby

You often see rubies in different shades with different origins. Its quality variates not only on the bases of how rich the color is but also from where they have been extracted.

1 Burmese (Pigeon Blood) Ruby



As the name states pigeon blood ruby. Its color is just like the color of the blood of a pigeon, it is of this deep red color.

You will even find it in pinkish red color as well, it’s all due to the presence of chromium in it. Originates from Myanmar. 

Burmese ruby is one of the top rated, high quality and expensive rubies in the market. 

There are many Gem labs out there which often make rubies go through a treatment called Heating treatment. In which they heat the jewel to bring out its rich red color.

Now if you go out there to some authorized dealer he will ask you which ruby you want treated or non-treated one.

The basic standard to check a ruby is that all rubies have certain blemishes or smudge in them. So if you see those in a ruby it’s real.

2 Sri Lankan (Ceylon) Ruby



Sri Lankan rubies commonly known as Ceylon ruby are of very high quality and after Burmese ruby.

They have a pinkish shade to slight red and its unique combination it shows orange to red florescence in ultra violet light.

It has chromium in it and there is no iron present that’s why when experts look at it, it itself tells about its origin.

3 Thai Ruby



Thai ruby is the second in the list. It is expensive and has a very good quality after Burmese ruby. Found in Bangkok of deep red color, consists a combination of chromium and iron.

It has a very rich history. A Chinese traveler in 1408 put forth the reference of Thai ruby. He stated a market Chanthaburi in Siam where they were sold.

It originated from Bo Rai Thailand Trat province and there was a time by the 1980's it satisfied the need of supplying 95 percent of rubies all over the world.

4 Afghanistan Ruby



Afghani ruby plays a vital role in the list of best quality rubies in the world, historical presence since 1st century. It is extracted from Badakshan and Jadalek regions of Afghanistan.

It ranges from light pink shades to rich deep red color, with different quality variations. It won’t be wrong to say that such rubies can be rare as well.

Afghanistan is blessed with many gemstones a land that’s produces Amethyst, Rubies, Lapis-lazuli, Aquamarine, Topaz and many such beautiful high quality stones.

5 Madagascar Ruby



Madagascar is also one of the top rated rubies in the world. They are extracted from Andilamena and Vatomandry mining area of Madagascar.

There are wide varieties of this ruby from top quality to the cheap ones. Such rubies have orange shades to natural red color.

They are relatively new as compared to others but yet have a well worth in the market.

6 African Ruby



African rubies originate from Mozambique and Kenya and consist of various shades and quality. It has this purple like shade to deep red.

The color again depends on the combination of elements in it.

African rubies of different qualities are found in many places and are comparatively less expensive the Burmese and Thai ruby.

7 Tanzanian Ruby



Tanzanian rubies are less expensive as compared to Burmese and Thai rubies. They are very much similar to Hessonite gemstone due to its color and appearance.They originate from Songea region.

Tanzanian rubies have a unique composition, they start to lose the color and quality if they are of bigger size. Smaller the ruby will have more worth because it will better quality.

So people prefer and buy the small ones. It has different red shades from pinkish, purple to deep red.

8 Star Ruby



Star ruby like star sapphire exhibits aster-ism 3, 6, 9 and rarely 12 rayed star is formed on the surface of the jewel. Star is seen on it due to needle shaped rutile inclusion.

Just like all rubies its saturation and the quality of the star defines its worth. It color tones are red, pinkish, purple shade to red, orange shade to red and even a brownish shade. 

Yet the most valued is deep red.

It is found in different places Myanmar, Sri lanka, Africa etc.
