Emeralds

Emerald is a form beryl stone, which is green in color due to chromium. They say emerald is formed when chromium after eruption of volcano or earthquake contacts beryl, silicon or aluminum.
Emerald is one of the very old jewels with a history of rich 5 to 6 thousand years. Emeralds were mines in Egypt from Mount Smaragdus aka The Mountain of Emerald since 1500 BCE.
Emerald of huge abundance was extracted from Egyptians mines by Roman and Byzantine Empires and later by Islamic Emperors.
Emerald is the part of the top three famous jewels of the world Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald. The blue, the red and the green.
Emerald lies at 8-7.5 on Mohs scale of hardness. It can cost from very low when in low quality to even more expensive then diamond when in best quality and color.
There are four C’s that define the worth of an emerald Color, Clarity, Cut and Crystal. Emerald is the birthstone of May.
Emeralds have different origins but the famous ones are Colombia, Zambia, Brazil and Pakistan.
Rest, emeralds are also found in Zimbabwe, America, Australia, Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Russia, Italy, Nigeria, Switzerland, Africa and many other countries.

Types of Emerald

1 Colombian Emerald


Colombia is famous for the best quality emerald in the world due to its beautiful rich green color emerald.
Colombia is situated in South America and it produces 70 – 95 percent of the world’s emerald that is exported all around the world,
Colombia has three mines working to provide world with such beautiful jewel Coscuez, Chivor and Muzo. These all mines are situated near Colombia’s capital Bogota.
Emeralds of Colombia have rich bright dark leaf like green color to bluish green. Due to presence of large amount of chromium, with lots of inclusions as compared to Zambian and Brazilian emeralds.
Colombian emeralds have Jardin in them. Jardin is derived from French word known as Garden. Colombian emeralds have inclusions that look like branches or roots of plants.

2 Zambian Emerald


Zambia is situated in Africa and is the second largest producer of emeralds after Colombia. Its emeralds are extracted mostly from Kafubu River and about 45km southwest of Kitwe.
Zambian emeralds have more clarity as compared to Colombian emeralds. They have very less inclusion in comparison.
Zambian emeralds have vivid green color and even some times show bluish shade due to presence of iron in them.

3 Pakistani Emerald


Pakistan is blessed with one of the best quality emerald in the world it has a rich green color as that of Colombian and Zambian emerald.
It has this distinctive smoothness and clarity from rich green to bluish green, even lighter tones emerald.
Pakistani emerald is extracted from mine of swat valley which was first discovered in 1958 in the era of Prince Miangul Jahanzeb. Later, in 1968 it became the property of Government of Pakistan.
The mine of swat even remained non-operational from 1998 till 2010 because of battle between Taliban and Pakistan Army. A time when such beautiful emerald was also named as “The Blood Emerald”.
Fizza Ghat Mine of swat is currently working again since 2010.
4 Brazilian Emerald

Brazilian emeralds are also of very good quality. They are being mined since 1960, but were initially found in 1920s.
Brazilian emeralds are found at Nova Era belt in the gem rich state of Minas Gerais and Belmont mine.
Brazilian emeralds have lighter shades of green and clarity as compared with Colombian and Zambian emeralds. The shade is because of Vanadium presence.

5 Trapiche Emerald


Trapiche emerald is a very rare kind of emerald found in Colombia and it’s been reported to be extracted from Brazil as well.
It contains six lines or rays of dark impurities those look like a star or flower on the surface of such emerald.
They are generally found in the western part of the Eastern Cordillera basin, in the Muzo, Coscuez and Penas Blancas mines of Colombia.
