What is Tiger’s Eye

Tiger eye or Tiger’s Eye is a form of Quartz. It is commonly found where Iron deposits are in abundance. Tiger’s eye is a stone which is of very beautiful color shades.

Tiger’s Eye is formed when Quartz crystal embeds with Crocidolite. Crocidolite is basically a Blue colored mineral which contains fibers and is made of Iron and Sodium.

Gemologist state that Iron naturally replaces Crocidolite fibers but retains a few of them and its fibrous shape. Due to this Crocidolite, Iron gives this beautiful Golden, Copper color which forms Tiger’s eye.

Tiger’s Eye is formed by the composition of Sodium Oxide and its various shades are due to Iron Oxide.

Tiger’s eye color is very stunning, like looking at silky patterns of gold with Chatoyancy (Cat Eye) effect. More the Iron more it will show Golden Brownish Color. If less Iron is present, then stone shows darker or its bluish color that forms Hawk’s Eye.

Tiger’s Eye is abundantly found in South Africa. It takes is place at 6 – 7 out of 10 in Mohs Hardness Scale and is translucent light passes through but not entirely.

It's also said that Tiger’s Eye is formed when Quartz and Crocidolite form together filled in veins sealed together for years and eventually form such beautiful gem.

Tiger’s eye is valued a lot when it shows silky beautiful Chatoyancy (cat’s eye) effect. It increases it collector’s value.

When Tiger’s Eye is heated it shows Red shade which is named as Red Tiger’s Eye. It is valued more when it is natural. When Mother Earth heats it herself. People also take it through heat treating process which gives it this beautiful Red shade.

Types of Tiger’s Eye


Golden Tiger’s Eye

Golden Tiger’s Eye or Tiger’s Eye is commonly known by this Golden color. When someone hears about his gem they make a picture of Golden one. It has beautiful appearance of Chocolate Brown surface with Golden and Yellowish lines, strands or Chatoyancy (cat’s eye) effect on it. With such beautiful silky luster shine. When you move it slightly in light it shows Chatoyancy effect.


Hawk’s Eye

Hawk’s Eye is a form of Tiger’s Eye but its given this name Hawk or Falcon’s Eye because of its color. As stated above it has less Iron and more Crocidolite in it, which is of bluish shade so it has its own identity. It is found in many shades varying from Dark Brown, Black or Bluish with Chatoyancy. It is so beautiful that often people collect them due to its color shades more than Golden Tiger’s Eye.


Red Tiger’s Eye

Red Tiger’s Eye are formed when Tiger’s Eye is heated at certain temperature it gives this beautiful Red shade and permanently retains this color. They are found naturally but mostly they are heated in factories and are valued a lot due to its Red shade which looks good in jewelry. It shows this Red Chatoyancy on brownish surface.


Tiger Iron

Uniqueness of this stone is that it’s a mixture, bands or lines of Golden Tiger’s Eye, Red Jasper and Black Hematite. It shows such beautiful pattern that is worth collecting. It’s an art by the nature on such mesmerizing canvas, unique combination of colors and luster which shines, undoubtedly a breath taking sight.


Mara Mamba Tiger’s Eye

Mara Mamba Tiger’s Eye is a very rare and unique form of Tiger’s Eye. Experts say that it is a very ancient gem. It was formed in many Million years.

It is said that Mara Mamba Tiger’s Eye was formed when Oxygen dissolved in Salt water mixed with Iron which was produced by under water volcanoes. Which in the form of Iron Oxide seeped in sea floor and formed bands of Iron and Silica.

In the sea bed heat caused Crystallization and seeped Sodium formed Riebeckite. With passage of time, volcanic eruptions and earth quakes, Riebeckite was replaced by Silica which formed yellow colored Goethite.

All this collectively formed Mara Mamba Tiger’s Eye. It is only found in Hamersley Ranges of the Pilbara Region of Western Australia.

Mara Mamba is a very colorful gem with color bands of White (Quartz), Yellow (Goethite), Red (Hematite), Blue (Riebeckite), Green (Mixture of Riebeckite and Goethite) and Black (Hematite and Magnetite).

 Origins of Tiger’s Eye

Tiger’s Eyes are abundantly found in South Africa and Australia. They are found in such abundance that they are not too expensive. Tiger’s Eye are also found in Burma, India, Namibia, America, Brazil, China, Spain and Korea.
