What is Peridot (Zabarjad)

Peridot (Zabarjad) is a beautiful single colored gemstone of Green color, which is because of Iron. It is a magnesium rich olivine form of mineral. It is form in very though conditions.

Peridot (Zabarjad) shows shades of green Olive Green, Yellowish Green, Brownish Green, Grass Green and Dark green. Most valued is the one having Pure Grass Green shade.

Peridot (Zabarjad) unlike other gemstones is not found on the earth surface rather, it is crystallized in the mantle of the earth 90 miles deep inside where magma is formed.

Peridot (Zabarjad) comes to the surface when a volcano erupts or through tectonic movement. After eruption when magma cools down it gives such beautiful gem called Peridot.

They say there are only two such gems which are formed in such extreme conditions Diamond and Peridot (Zabarjad).

Peridot (Zabarjad) is the stone of August and has a very rich history. It has been given many descriptions for intense, Faridat” is the name of Peridot (Zabarjad) in Arabic and is said to be the “Poor Man’s Emerald”.

French call it “Peritot” which means “Gold”. Peridot (Zabarjad)  is also called “Evening Emerald” even ”Substitute of Emerald” due to its color and beautiful light hues.

Experts state that Peridot’s have a history backing to 1500 B.C and were abundantly found in ST. John the volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea east of Egypt. This was the well-known Peridot (Zabarjad) producing land from past 3500 years.

Peridot (Zabarjad) are also found in meteorites of certain types as per experts and researchers peridot (Zabarjad) traces were also found on mars and moon.

Peridot (Zabarjad) is listed from 6.5 – 7 out of 10 at Mohs Hardness Scale. Peridot (Zabarjad) is often treated with Iron Oxide to get the beautiful Green to Yellowish Green Shade which is preferred a lot.

Though Peridot (Zabarjad) have many sources but the best quality is from Egypt and same is the quality that is being provided by Pakistan.

Peridot (Zabarjad) are also found in China, Brazil, USA, Norway, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Ethiopia and Kyrgyzstan

Color: Most valued is Pure Grass Green color but most are found in Yellowish Green Shades and are of jewelry quality.

Clarity: Fine quality Peridot (Zabarjad) are eye clean they might show black small spots when magnified.

Cut: Peridot (Zabarjad) with a proper cut is valued a lot either in Emerald cut, Cushion cut or Diamond cut.

Carats: Commercially they are found around 5 carats but bigger Peridot (Zabarjad) with clarity is valued a lot.

Origins of Peridot (Zabarjad)


Zabagad Island Egyptian Peridot (Zabarjad)

Peridot (Zabarjad) are famous of Egypt because it has a rich history in Ancient Egypt, found at Zabargad volcanic island (St. John) in Red Sea.

It was the island that gave world the best quality Peridot (Zabarjad) until the island exhausted. Peridot (Zabarjad) were treasured by Egyptian in ancient times, so the location of this island was a secret which was later discovered in 1906.

The largest Peridot (Zabarjad) placed in Smithsonian Museum, USA of 311.78 carats was found at Zabargad Island, Egypt.

Some historians believe that the Emerald collection of Cleopatra was not Emerald instead, it was Peridot (Zabarjad) because people use to confused these two Emerald and Peridot (Zabarjad).


Pakistani Peridot (Zabarjad)

Peridot (Zabarjad) came to a halt for a few time then in 1994 very beautiful high quality Peridot (Zabarjad) was found in Pakistan.

Peridot (Zabarjad) of Pakistan are of high quality as they very clear impurities free with beautiful green color and were in bigger sizes.

Peridot (Zabarjad) of Pakistan are found near very inhospitable pass in Kashmir region wester Himalayan limit at an altitude of 4500m.

After extraction Peridot (Zabarjad) are brought down to the valley. Climate conditions are of such intensity that one can only mine Peridot (Zabarjad) in summer season. They are also found near Pakistan – Afghanistan Boarder, Mansehra District and Kaghan valley.

It is said to be the best quality Peridot (Zabarjad) around the world due to its incomparable color and transparency. That’s why it has been given the name all over the world “Kashmir Peridot” due to its beauty and quality.

Kashmir Peridot is the name given to it in inspiration of Kashmir Sapphire. Pakistan has given certain very unique Peridot (Zabarjad) with mesmerizing beauty, sizes bigger than 100 carats. 


Burmese Peridot (Zabarjad)

Like Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma) is famous for producing high quality beautiful Peridot (Zabarjad). Which are admired a lot around the globe.

They are mined in Mogok region, north of Burma. It is also found in Bernardmyo District and Pyaung Gaung District.

It also produces Peridot (Zabarjad) of comparable bigger size and good quality gems.


American Peridot (Zabarjad)

American is producing commercially 70 – 80 percent of Peridot (Zabarjad) which are exported all over the world.

Arizona is rich with Peridot (Zabarjad) of Yellowish Green Color and they are of small size maximum 5 carats.

Peridot (Zabarjad) is extracted from Apache De San Carlos in Gila County and Buell Park in Apache County Arizona.


Chinese Peridot (Zabarjad)

China produces one of the finest Peridot (Zabarjad) like Burma and Pakistan.

The actual layer is often 90 miles deep but in china at Chen Bai Mountain it is found 30 – 40 miles deep that’s why it has less inclusions and a beautiful color.

Mount Lu situated in Jiangxi Province of China is also said to have Peridot (Zabarjad) of very good quality.

Most of the experts and gem hunters go to Jiaohe city in Jilin as well to get the best quality Peridot (Zabarjad).

Peridot (Zabarjad) are also found in Australia (Queens Island), Brazil (Minas Gerais), Hawaii (Mahana Beach), Ethopia (Oromia Region), Kyrgyzstan (Naryn Region), Norway (More og Romsdal) and Sri Lanka (Sabaragamuwa Province).
